The Sims has a feature where it generates HTML files with information about all the households in-game. This is one of those pages! If you want one, go into your game's UserData folder and look in the folder marked "Web Pages"

Game designer Will Wright was bursting with new game ideas after SimCity, he specifically wanted to make a dollhouse game but just couldn't quite get things going.. The Wright family tragically lost their home to the 1991 Oakland Firestorm. Upon rebuilding their life and home, Wright started to observe the way he slowly reacquired their personal belongings - like a dollhouse! The game was meant to poke a bit of fun at american consumerism culture and materialism.

Home Tactics: The Experimental Domestic Simulator!

Wright had just finished work on SimAnt, an ant colony simulator depicting how social insects work, so controlling little bugs was already on his brain! Influenced directly from books Abraham Maslow's A Theory of Human Motivation which describes humans hierarchy of needs, Christopher Alexander's works on architecture and urban design A Pattern Language & Notes On the Synthesis of Form, Charles Hampden-Turner's Maps of the Mind detailing theories on how the mind works, as well as Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics, which despite being about comics, offered many lessons which Wright applied to the game.

it went through so many iterations - more than 10!

on june 4th 1998, a year and a half before the sims launched, was a prototype - the sims steering committee! it was pitched as a storyline based game about 3 sims: ross, sam, and mercedes, in a town called "Happy Acres" with each household having a unique scenario

this build from may 1999 shows children for the first time, it also shows off the iconic skull panel for needs

here are some shots from e3 1999!
